Putting Location Information (Geo-Tags) on Photos

Setting Geo-Tags with Picasa

Picasa is a very useful photo editing and organizing program from Google.  However, Google replaced Picasa with Google Photos four years ago and no longer supports or updates desktop Picasa.  Picasa can still be used - it can be downloaded here.

In Picasa, a sidebar can be opened with Google Maps which lets users "geo-tag" photos.  However, this function needs to be activated as follows:

Close Picasa and and perform following steps:

  1. Open Registry Editor (regedit.exe)

  2. Navigate to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_BROWSER_EMULATION

  3. Create a new DWORD entry with name: picasa3.exe and Hexadecimal value: 2af8 (Decimal: 11000)

Setting Geo-Tags with PicaGeoTag

PicaGeoTag will not only allows you to geo-tag a single or a selection of photos, it will place those photos on a GPS track by matching the time-stamp of the photos with that of the GPS device.  Impressive!

Download the program here.

Setting Geo-Tags with GeoSetter

GeoSetter also allows a user to geo-tag photos with a map interface.  GeoSetter has controls for many options, such as "time adjustment" to account for time zone changes to match GPS time settings if the camera time setting was neglected.

Download the program here.
